Jute and Flax Mills in Dundee
M Watson
"Jute and Flax Mills in Dundee" was just in time to document the four last spinning mills at work in Dundee, and yet it starts with the first mills in 1793. Illustrating the history of an industry that dominated Dundee, 'fireproof' and other distinctive constructional systems designed by local engineers who installed the machinery are discussed, and the book gives a full inventory of every spinning mill and steam-powered weaving factory: 125 of them. The birth of the Kolkata jute industry and adaptive re-use of mill buildings as a springboard to the renaissance of Dundee are two strands to the conclusion of this book.
